About

This project was made for a Motion Design course at DAAP. The assignment was to develop a title sequence based on an imagined TV series with a randomly chosen title; “solstice” in my case. Solstice is a sci-fi thriller set in the distant future, where a computer virus threatens humanity by directly hijacking higher brain function and exploiting bio-medical technology. The pandemic leads to mass paranoia which gives way to all out societal collapse.

Pre-visualization

The moodboard serves to benchmark and collect visual inspiration for the gritty sci-fi theme. In the storyboard, I’m setting up key moments with notations for movement and action.

Style frames

A couple frames of key art establish graphic language, colors and typography to reference throughout development. I went for a “digital fabric” effect to illustrate the complex systems of technology forming a bigger picture in the world of the Solstice series.

Motion process

This project relies heavily on dot matrices and subtle transitions. I found a useful third-party preset from workbench.tv to apply a halftone effect to footage with some levels adjustments to limit the dot size variation. Aside from that, most of the transitions between dots and shapes rely on match cuts and careful timing. This was all accomplished before I had any access to or experience using Trapcode, so everything is built in native After Effects.
